Exhibition and publication of ETSAB photographic Lab

Photography is an early love of mine. I started developing my own pictures (there was only film back then) in high school. The Lycée Français did have a photo lab and a class that I joined as soon as I was old enough to take it. I remember we could use it more or less unsupervised.

So when I started college I wanted to continue but there was not an active lab anymore when I got there. There were, though, the relics of an old lab, with machines and all, totally unused.

At the time I had a very good friend, Lisa, who was a German photographer and I asked her if she would see herself capable of helping to bring that old lab to life.

I don´t even remember how, but I found few students a year younger, who were also excited about the idea to create a photographic lab in the school, as it had had it in the past. Together we went to talk to the then director of cultural activities, Josep Maria Montaner, who let us create the COMISIÓN DE FOTOGRAFIA.

So, we cleaned up the space, rearranged the equipment, bought whatever was missing and Lisa became the ETSAB teacher of developing photographic film, so more students could learn and use the facilities as well. And now WE could use it at will 😊

We taught some students, we made an exhibition in the school and the year I was away on my exchange program, the rest of the commission did publish this little book. It is such a great memory of it. Reason why I am also adding it here.

It lasted only a couple years. After that I started working and the load in school was so huge for all of us that we did not continue it.

Idée Fixe  is a Transdisciplinary Studio of Art and Architecture, run by Cristina Guadalupe Galván.

If in a website you normally find finished objects and products to share, what we are sharing here are more ideas – tested, developed and lived -- and their processes, that in many instances ended up happily physical. The creative process is about experimentation and the life that goes with it. The life and the people.

While building this site I came across a quote that explained it to me much better, by architects Josep Ferrando & Marta Poch, for their Quaderns d´Arquitectura, issue 273, THE THINKING TRADE:

In a world dominated by images of the finished object and the immediacy of access to multimedia content, this issue of Quaderns sets out to reflect on the role of the architect –by means of their working processes, of the working methods (…) leaving the image of the built project on the background.

For artist Sol LeWitt, the process was also the work:

The idea becomes a machine that makes the art. (...) It is the process of conception and realization with which the artist is concerned.

Architect Josep Maria Sostres said something similar:

The project, obviously as a mental conception, as a will to form, has a sovereignty, it has an internal power that must be imposed.

So this archive-website of Idee-Fixe, records more these ideas, processes and in many instances the collaborations that made them possible.

It´s about THE LIFE OF IDEAS.
